If you’re new to floatation therapy, you may be a little unsure about what to expect and how to prepare. This guide will have you walking into your floating experience, armed with the knowledge of what to expect as a beginner.
Preparing For Your Float Day Of
To get the most out of your floatation therapy experience, avoid caffeine or any stimulants 4-6 hours ahead of your float. Stimulants can interrupt the relaxation and sensory deprivation that is, afterall, the whole reason you are embarking on this experience in the first place.
Have a bit of food on your stomach. A snack or light meal 60-90 minutes ahead of time can reduce the chances of your belly growling, which could be a loud disruption when you're in your session.
It is perfectly normal to go through an adjustment phase for the first 30 minutes. You may experience heightened awareness of your breathing and heart rate. This is perfectly alright. Allow yourself to go through the motions as you body goes from a state of wanting control, to eventually, letting go and surrending.
The Experience
Orientation: Your session begins with an overview from Levity staff. They’ll explain how to use the tank, adjust the lighting, and what to do if you need assistance.
Prep: You have your own private room with a shower. You must shower before entering to remove oils, lotions, etc. We take our hygiene and water cleanliness very serious at Levity. We have earplugs if you want them as well as plenty of towels. You will float in the nude.
Floating Effortlessly: Lie back and let the high salt concentration support your body. There’s no need to try to float—the water does all the work. We have an optional head pillow should you want to use that.
Relaxing in Silence: Many tanks are soundproof and pitch-black, creating a sensory-free environment. If complete darkness feels uncomfortable, you can opt for dim lights.
Mind and Body Rest: You may notice your mind wandering at first. This is normal. Over time, your thoughts will quiet, and you’ll enter a meditative state. Physically, the weightlessness relieves pressure on joints and muscles.
Ending the Session: You’ll know your session is over when soft music plays and pump turns on creating soft bubbles.
After Your Float: Post-Session Relaxation
Take Your Time: Move slow, don’t sit up too fast. After exiting the tank, rinse off the saltwater in the shower. Take a few moments to sit in the lobby and relax if you can.
Notice the Calm: Many people report feeling deeply relaxed and mentally clear after a float. Allow yourself to enjoy this newfound sense of calm.
Rehydrate: Drink plenty of water to help your body rehydrate after the session.
Reflect on Your Experience: Every float is unique. Take note of how you feel physically and mentally, and consider journaling your thoughts for future reference.
